Turkey 2014/2015 - 1.day

1. day: From Szeged (Hungary) to Belgrade (Serbia)
Our journey started from Székkutas, a little village in Southeast-Hungary. The bus deparded around 7 a.m, and we reached Szeged around 8. Szeged is the largest city of Southeast-Hungary, from here you can catch a bus to Serbia, e.g. to Szabadka (Subotica) or Újvidék (Novi Sad). Unfortunately there is no direct bus service to Belgrád (Belgrade).
There is a bus at 10 a.m. to Subotica, the journey normally takes less than 2 hours, but we weren’t very luck, the timing of our journey was a little bad, because there were only a few days until Christmas, and there was a crazy crowd at the border. We had to get off the bus for passport control on the hungarian side, and then back. On the serbian side the immigration officer came onto the bus. This procedure is a little bit awkward…
We arrived in Subotica before noon, if we had had enough money (Serbian dinar), we could have been able to buy our ticket for the Nisexpress to Belgrade, but we were short by a couple hundred dinars, so we couldn’t buy the tickets for the bus. Be aware, if you leave the platform to buy a ticket, you must purchase a platform ticket to go back to the platform.
Finally we went to the railway station, bought 2 tickets for the train, and the price of both was less than 1 busticket’s price. We had about 1 hour until the train departed from Subotica, so we went to the main square, drank a caffee and changed some money.
The train leaves at 14:30 from Subotica to Belgrade, but prepare for a long-long journey. It’s only 180 km, but it takes 3,5 hours by train. By the way, the train is comfortable, but extremely slow until Novi Sad, after Novi Sad it’s a little bit faster.
We arrived at Belgrade around 6 PM. The train station is in the middle of the town. We tried to find the way to the Downtown Inn Hostel, we asked for direction three times, but all the people we asked were tourists. Finally we found the right way, and the hostel was only about 10 minutes from the train station. The hostel is in an old building, on the top floor, and there isn’t any elevator. In fact the reception is located on the top floor, our room was on the floor below it.
The floor seemed to be very scruffy, but the apartment was in better condition. The assistant - a young girl - was very nice and polite, she was waiting for us in the evening, and looked up transportation facilities (by public bus) to the airport for us.
